This is the first time of  European Football Championship was held. In that moment, the championship using format home and away game. The knock-out phase was used at semifinal which held at the host country.

At that time, Euro marred by protests from the French Football Federation considers the first implementation should take place in France. Finally, the tournament was held in France.

In final, Soviet Union can overwhelmed Yugoslavia with the score 2-1. Soviet Union win the match through the extra time.
